Hrvatskevode manage water estate and water structures and perform public authorities under which they issue water rights and other acts, conclude contracts on concessions and contracts on exploitation of public water estate etc.

The first organization for water management in the territory that is now the Republic of Croatia was established more than 140 years ago. It was called Flood Protection Association (Nasipsko društvo) in Darda established for the purpose of performing regulation and other types of work for protection from adverse effects of the Drava River.  This period has seen great changes in state, political and legal systems, which in turn brought about changes in the organization of water management. Water associations and communities, different administrations, interest groups, companies, work organizations and other forms of organizations were established and then dissolved and it was not until 1965 that organized approach to water management was established.

Since more than 50 years WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature) focuses on conserving critical places and species that are particularly important for the conservation of the earth’s biodiversity as well as on reducing the negative impact of human activity, i.e. our ecological footprint. The WWF involvement and support ranges from EU Life funded river restoration projects (e.g. upper Drava or Mura in Austria) to the international Drava River Declaration (Maribor 2008) as well as the creation of a Transboundary UNESCO Biosphere Reserve Mura-Drava-Danube to protect and sustainably manage about 1.000.000 hectares of riverine landscapes along the lower courses of the Drava and related Mura and Danube sections which are among Europe’s most ecologically important river ecosystems, the so called “Amazon of Europe”.
